clues to identifying rocks and minerals

Erica,

To identify this rock, or any rock, you need a few clues besides the color.
1. Where did the rock come from? If you know this you can look at a geology map to see what kinds of rocks are found there. Geology maps are easy to find- just google geology map + state.
Reading a geo map is a little more involved but only because they have so much information. This will help you get started:

2. Do some simple tests. You can find out about mineral tests here:

Scratch test for hardnes and streak test are 2 important ones.
