I don't know anything really about it other than it looks a whole lot different than any"Rock" I've ever seen

This looks like a concretion. Concretions are the rock equivalent of a snowball. A pebble, fossil, or ? picks up minerals, sand and whatever is around. The other stuff gets glued on by minerals like calcite and over time it grows like a snowball!
