Is this basalt. Its magnetic and extremely heavy.

I can't tell much from the picture but... Basalt is not magnetic.
Where was your specimen found? Australia has significant iron deposits, including banded ironstone. One notable location is the Hamersley Province in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
